If we want children to flourish, to become truly empowered, then let us allow them to love the earth before we ask them to save it. Perhaps this is what Thoreau had in mind when he said, the more slowly trees grow at first, the sounder they are at the core, and I think the same is true of human beings. ~David Sobel #whatdidwefind #scrolltosee #dirtyhands
Great opportunity to support Oatland and get some yummy food from the Crab Shack.
The fog this morning gave us some beautiful gifts. We couldn’t choose a favorite. Zoom in to see all the tiny individual water droplets. #foundatoatland #fallfog #spartinasurprises @ Oatland Island Wildlife Center

Invasive species removal has been a focus in the last few years at Oatland. Recent storms created disturbed areas that invasive species can easily take over decreasing biodiversity and out competing native plants. In an effort to abstain from herbicide use in this wet area a mechanical control was used on this Chinese Tallow Tree (Triadica sebifera). Manual removal is ideal for this resilient species but on established trees this method was tested. Early results after 6 months show this method to be approximately 80% effective in the test area. #invasivespeciesremoval #chinesetallowtree #biodiversitree
Spiny Oak Slug moth seems a name unfit for this beauty. At least the scientific name is cool my rough translation is glorious dolphin. #eucleadelphinii #mothmacro #smallisbeautiful
