Is your child getting daily opportunities for down-time? Here's how to do it, plus 5 quiet time activities for children. "While you may be fully invested in creating quiet time for your children each day, getting them on board can be a whole different issue! Transitions are hard for children, and transitioning from running around outside to quiet time can be tough. The trick to having a successful quiet time is structuring your day to build towards quiet time."

The 8th grade celebrated the students’ transition into the last phase of childhood - adolescence - last Friday at their Rite of Passage Ceremony. They are leaving the 2nd phase of childhood where they were predominantly taught through the feeling life to develop imagination and creativity. This 3rd phase is where children develop their intellect and their own judgement. They will now be taught through deep thinking. We took a trip to Arabia Mountain where the students, alon...g with their families, wrote the WISHES they had for the next 7 years of their life onto a paper lantern and then they released their wishes into the universe. Next, around a bonfire, Ms. Rubio read a letter about each student written by someone (not a family member) who sees that child’s amazing qualities and how they will take on this next phase of their life. You could hear a pin drop as the students heard such beautiful words spoken about one another. These letters were given to each child in a journal they get to take into their next 7 years. It was a beautiful, meaningful and reverent night for all!

These three brothers, all Waldorf Graduates, rowed their way to breaking three world records as the first team of brothers to row their way across 3,000 miles of the Atlantic Ocean. They attribute their perseverance and their success to their Waldorf education. If our graduates have the stamina to row the Atlantic Ocean, what could possibly stop them from truly changing the world? "We were fortunate enough to go to schools that offered us a huge number of opportunities outside of the classroom growing up. All of us got involved as much as we could: on the sports field, in the music department and pipe band; producing art or public speaking we were all very eager to get stuck in wherever we could."

During this Michaelmas time of year, we are all called to face our inner dragons, to conquer our fears, and to step boldly toward the next season of our destiny. Have you ever wondered why Waldorf students create form drawing in their Main Lesson books? "What that truly means to a student who practices art and illustration is addressed in An Interview with Milton Glaser, published in Metropolis Magazine. Glaser, author of Drawing Is Thinking, reiterates the neurological benefits and expands those benefits to a deeper understanding of abstract thinking. 'There is no greater instrument for understanding the visual world than the hand a...nd a pencil, because the idea of creating or recreating form produces a different neurological pattern than using a computer to find things. To understand the meaning of form -- what a shape is, what an edge is, what space is -- there's nothing more instructive than the act of drawing Illustration provokes the viewer by its symbolic relationship to reality. Abstraction encourages the mind to bridge the distance from suggestion to reality.' See more

Our Grade 6 students have been writing their own musical compositions. Prior to Covid, this was usually done with the recorder, but this year we are encouraging musical creativity using other instruments.

Grade 2 enjoys "Feast Fridays". Here they ate Japanese rice balls the students prepared using Ms. Maruping’s recipe, roasted pumpkin from Ms. Jesse's garden, and salad, tea, and sprouts that the class grew in our own WSA school garden.

Calling artists, makers & vendors for this year’s Holiday Fair Artist’s Market! We are looking for Waldorf-inspired beautiful, unique, and handmade items made by the WSA community and beyond to be part of our virtual Artist’s Market (happening from mid-November to mid-December)! Grade 6 is in their Roman Empire block.

To prepare for Día de Muertos, Grade 4 students are making calaveras de papel maché using sticks they gathered around campus. Balloons are used to create the skull.

Our outdoor classrooms might be supporting our student's health in multiple ways. "Even in that short duration of the study, researchers found microbes on the skin and guts of children who regularly played in green spaces had increased in diversity - a feature which is tied to an overall healthier immune system."
