Congratulations to Jim Bearden, Cobb County’s Volunteer of the Year. Jim has been so successful at bringing awareness to Bluebirds that throughout Metro-Atlanta... he is known affectionately as, the Bluebird Guy. He has provided over 11 years of service as a member of the Friends of Green Meadows Preserve. For seven of those years Jim has served as the coordinator of the Blue Bird program at Green Meadows Preserve and currently serves as the vice president of the Friends of Green Meadows Preserve. In his efforts to become a more impactful volunteer Jim successfully completed the University of Georgia Master Gardener Program in 2013. Since that time, he has logged over 3,000 volunteer hours through the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County system and is a regular volunteer at the Green Meadows Community Garden. Cobb County is so lucky to benefit from Jim’s love of ornithology. He has connected countless individuals to Green Meadows Preserve and has provided a lifetime of knowledge to the public. See more

At yesterday’s meeting, the Board of Commissioners presented a proclamation to the family of the late Jean Wright, who is the first woman from Cobb County to be... inducted into the Georgia Women of Achievement Hall of Fame as a "female trailblazer." In 1948, the Wrights bought a 20-acre cotton farm in Marietta. As a conservationist, Jean worked diligently to restore her property to the forest it had once been. It now serves our community as the Jean and Elwood Wright Environmental Education Center. In addition to her conservation work, Jean volunteered at the Cobb County animal shelter. She was known affectionately as the puppy lady. Cobb highlighted Jean’s contributions by naming the animal shelter’s puppy room in her honor, creating the Jean Wright Award and appointing her as an honorary member of the Animal Control Board. She truly was a trailblazer! See more
