JOE UPDATE - DOING AMAZING! Joe has been home at the Sanctuary at Pine Hill Farm rehabilitating from his surgery and is doing great. He is on limited turnout for the next few weeks until he is rechecked. He has round pen turnout in the mini area so he has friends with him at all times. Boober Dude is his assigned barn buddy when he comes in at night. He will return to Auburn for a recheck in mid-February. Once we get the all clear he will be introduced to the pasture with Boo, Springer and Misty. Stay tuned!

ADOPTION UPDATE - GAMBEL When Gambel arrived at the rescue several years ago, he came with his best friend, Rhythym, a Mustang gelding who he had been with for years. Rhythm was later adopted to a wonderful family, but they were only planning to adopt one horse at that time. Since that time, we couldn’t understanding why Gambel wasn’t getting more adoption interest as he is truly a gem! Well....the stars aligned and Rhythms adopters now own a beautiful farm close by and were ready to expand their equine family. They finalized their adoption of Gambel today, and brought his old friend Rhythm along for the ride to pick him up. The boys were so happy to be together again. Congrats to Debbie and Lanie on your new boy! . Happy Trails boys!

JOE UPDATE - SURGERY WAS SUCCESSFUL Joe went in for surgery yesterday to drain the infection from his guttural pouch. As we mentioned before the previous surgery site where his pouch was supposed to drain had scarred over, causing the pouch to fill and abscess. Instead of just re-lasering an opening that may well scar over again, they have created a new exit (stoma) under his chin which will remain permanently open. What this looks like is a permanent tracheostomy in a human. This will require daily cleaning and care, but will help ensure he doesn’t continue to have the infected guttural pouch which can seriously infect the bone and limit his ability to breath. Joe will be on antibiotics for the next few months, but is expected to make a full recovery.

CRAY UPDATE Well Mr Cray has settled in beautifully and has made fast friends with Emmy. She has struggled with building relationships with other horses due to her traumatic first 6 months of life. But Cray is sweet and gentle, which is the perfect matchup for Emmy. It’s the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

JOE UPDATE - SURGERY TODAY Joe has been at Auburn Vet hospital through the weekend having testing done. At this point, the best option is to perform surgery to drain his guttural pouch and create a new opening under his chin to allow the guttural pouch to drain. He had a surgery a year ago that repiped his guttural pouch drainage down through his nostril, but unfortunately the surgical site has been completely grown over with scar tissue. Additionally, joe’s liver values are significantly elevated, therefore we will be having his liver biopsied today as well. Please keep Joe in your thoughts and prayers and we will update once he is successfully out of surgery this afternoon.

FARRIER DAY AT PINE HILL FARM It was a cold one at the farm this morning. A brisk 34 for the herds trims and more then one of the herd was a little wound up from the cold. We are thankful for our hoof care professional, Chance Hester, for his patience and dedication to our herd, even when they are acting a fool. Our donkey trio usually require a little medicinal assistance to be able to have their feet trimmed successfully. However, today all three were perfect angels du...e to the work of trainer Josh Littlejohn, who has been working with them on handling and confidence. Having an exceptional group of equine professionals working with us is pivotal to our success, and we certainly have an amazing group. Thanks guys!

Xena and Boober Dude were the first into the barn to sample the freshly filled hay bags. The temps are about to start dropping and the rain is coming in. But the mini-herd will be warm and dry snug in their barn. The full size herd are all cozied around their hay huts under their run in shelters, snug in their rain coats. Thor was happy to model his freshly cleaned sheet, which will likely be a muddy disaster by tomorrow. #sanctuaryherd #pinehillfarm #trinityrescueinc

WELCOME TO THE RESCUE - CRAZY HORSE CRAY We were contacted yesterday about a senior gelding who had just lost his best friend and only pasture mate for the last 15 years. Cray was devastated and wasn’t prepared to be alone. Concerned for his health if he remained alone, his owner contacted us to see if we could take him. He arrived at our Winding Creek location last night. As of this morning, he was making fast friends with Emmy, Romeo and Tinkerbell. Welcome home Cray! We are happy to have you.

JOE UPDATE - UPHILL BATTLE Joe has been at Auburn University Vet Hospital this week for evaluation. As of now, he is eating well and is comfortable. They have done a number of tests, including bloodwork and a nasal scope to check his guttural pouch. As expected, the initial surgical site that was created to help drain his guttural pouch has developed scar tissue, limiting the ability for it to drain. Additionally, his bloodwork came back abnormal, with his liver values sign...ificantly elevated, indicating advanced liver disease. The plan at this time is to do an ultrasound and liver biopsy to see what we are dealing with and determine his prognosis. Secondly, they will complete a head CT to ensure that it is safe to complete the revision surgery for his guttural pouch drain. This will all be completed on Monday. Providing he is cleared for surgery, Joe’s medical bills for his stay is projected to be $3000. If you can assist with his expenses, we would be very grateful. Boo demonstrating his southern gentleman manners by taking a bow before breakfast. . We are happy to report that although he has been reintroduced to round bales, he has not yet had any heaves episodes. We keep our bales netted, which seems to help. We will monitor him to ensure he continues to breath easy. #heaves #medicinehatpaint #sanctuaryhorse #sanctuaryatpinehillfarm #trinityrescueinc

OFF TO AUBURN WE GO Joe, a senior quarter horse gelding, came to Trinity last Spring. He had surgery about a year ago to treat persistent abscesses near his guttural pouch. The procedure assisted in rerouting drainage out of his guttural pouch down through his left nostril. He has done really well since his surgery last year, but this week he has developed another abscess which is not draining appropriately. We are transporting him to Auburn tomorrow for evaluation and treatment. Please keep Joe in your thoughts tomorrow as he prepares for what is likely another surgery. We will update his progress as we get more information.
