March 21 5th Sunday in Lent Sermon Title: Again & Again We Are Reformed Scripture: John 12:20-33 & Jeremiah 31:31-34 As Israel stood on the cliff of destruction, Babylonian forces at the gate, Jeremiah speaks of hope and a future when God would reform a covenant THEY had broken they had cheated on God like an unfaithful spouse but were still part of God’s future! We also desire for God to write on our hearts so that God’s law can re-shape and re-form us from the insid...e out. Reformation (re-forming) is a journey of letting the old fall away for something new to emerge, of returning to God’s words over and over, of being drawn into the heart of God. Jesus says the seed must appear to die (to our selfish ways) to bury that so that God’s renovation can work. This is the process of justification and sanctification; transformation must be internal and communal. What a sales pitch, right. Hey, don’t you want to come with us and die? Doesn’t make sense unless you know God, and trust God for well, what ARE you trusting God for? See more

February 7 5th Sunday after the Epiphany Sermon Title: I Just Don’t Need It The Gospel for People Who Have Everything Part 2 Scripture: 1 Corinthians 9:16-23 (CEB) How do we present a gospel to people who say they just don’t need it? Bishop Willimon offers two examples:... Driving along a rural road in North Carolina, I passed two little churches with signs in front of each church. PREPARE TO MEET THY GOD, read the sign at the first church. SING A NEW SONG UNTO THE LORD, read the sign at the second church. There you have the difference threats, obligations, payoffs, psychological manipulations, and attempts to get right with God [or] .a [grateful] response to a gracious God. Someday I’m going back and worship at that second church. I’ll wager that those folk know how to worship because they know whom to worship! Let us be that second church this Sunday! See more

January 31 4th Sunday after the Epiphany Sermon Title: Testimony "The Gospel for the Person Who Has Everything" Part 1 of 3 Scripture: Mark 1:21-28 (CEB) This Sunday we launch into a three-week series from a book by Bishop Will Willimon, The Gospel for the Person Who Has Everything. I find the premise appropriate for our context read this quote:... Just this past week I worshiped in a church where the pastor opened the service by plaintively saying, ‘We are here hurting, anxious, and groaning, seeking answers, lamenting .’ Looking around the gathered all-white, upper middle-class congregation, I thought they seemed in pretty good shape. A congregation of modern, relatively affluent, North American folk like us need pastoral encouragement to be even more self-centered and self-consumed? (pp. 14-15). There’s a pattern to our religious offerings that seek and enable the needy side of our nature and that has some validity. However, there are so many people who consider themselves accomplished, successful, thriving persons that decide, based on our messaging, that they don’t need faith, or church, or Jesus. Wouldn’t you want to know what Bishop Willimon thinks we should say to those people? Come and see this Sunday. See more
