One of the areas that has always interested me is affordable housing. Not the biggest, fanciest and/or over designed ‘showpiece’. The smallest spaces requiring the most practice and simple solutions are often the most challenging. Gentrification of urban areas and subsequent minority displacement seems to be a major issue once again. Architects and designers in our infinite creativity can have incredible impact on affordable housing needs in the communities we live and should... always be involved in that discussion. I always say we are problem solvers and together we can come up with solutions. But honestly many in the field that seek recognition through awards, magazine covers and accolades from peers don’t see the ‘business value’ in addressing issues such as affordable housing let alone issues of race and gender. This is the challenge. Architecture is predominately male with 2% being African American. Interior Design is predominantly female with 1.5% being African American. I have been the only person of color in the room too many times to count. My solutions often are different than my counterparts. Sometimes I can voice them, sometimes I can not. African American participation and opportunity, as with other fields, is key and I hope to make a difference one day in the area of affordable housing for first time home buyers. https://www.archdaily.com//architecture-must-recognize-the

Very good article. I am sure you have seen some of these in your area.
