Johnnie Lacy (1937-2010) was a leader in the independent living movement and fought for the rights of people with disabilities, especially people of color. She led Community Resources for Independent Living, a nonprofit in Hayward providing services and advocacy. Lacy spoke of being excluded from the Black community due to her disability and from the disability community due to being a person of color. As a Black woman in a wheelchair, she educated her communities about race and disability and served as a role model for many other Black disabled women. https://sdaction.org/about/disability-history/

Today, in honor of Black History Month, and the often unheard black voices of the Pharmacy profession, Moyes is proud to present a short highlight of the woman ...who helped shape the face of local community pharmacies in the United States: Ella P. Stewart. Stewart was born Ella Nora Phillips, in the small Virginia town of Springtown. She was the oldest of the four children of Henry H. Philips and Eliza T. (Carr) Phillips, who worked the land as sharecroppers. At six years of age, she was sent to live with her paternal grandmother in nearby Berryville, VA to attend grade school. Stewart was a phenomenal student, graduated at the top of her grade school class, and won several major scholarships to what was then the Storer Normal School (later, Storer College). It wouldn’t be until years later, when she began working as a bookkeeper at a local pharmacy, that she found an interest in becoming a pharmacist herself. In spite of the many hardships facing an individual of her sex and race at the time, Stewart gained admittance to the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in 1914, and graduated with her degree in pharmaceutical chemistry (Ph.C.) in 1916, becoming the first black woman to graduate from Pitt's pharmacy program. Ella began work as an assistant pharmacist working for two former classmates at the Mendelsson Drug Company, but eventually found her way into owning and operating her own pharmacy business, Myers Pharmacy, in 1918. In 1920, she married William Wyatt Stewart, a fellow pharmacist in Pittsburgh, and a fellow alumnus of the Pitt pharmacy program. The couple settled in Youngstown, Ohio, where Stewart was hired as a pharmacist at the Youngstown City Hospital. After some time, she and her husband moved to Detroit, where they stayed only briefly; in 1922, they decided to move to Toledo, Ohio to open their own pharmacy. Stewart’s Pharmacy quickly grew into a well-known establishment in Toledo’s Pinewood district, where nearly two thirds of the city’s Black community lived by the end of the 1920’s. The Stewarts often entertained other figures of Black history, such as Marian Anderson, Mary McLeod Bethune, and W. E. B. Du Bois in their spacious home above Stewart’s. True to the style of any local pharmacy, Stewart was active in many civic activities, including being a leading member of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) and the Enterprise Charity Club, a social-service organization run by African-American women. From 1944 to 1948 she served as president of the Ohio Association of Colored Women; and from 1948 to 1952, as president of the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs (NACWC). As leader of the NACWC, Stewart spoke out against segregation, discrimination, and racist stereotypes. In 1961 she became an inaugural member of the Toledo Board of Community Relations, which worked to improve race relations in the city, and to ensure enforcement of civil-rights legislation. Stewart's civic activities eventually took on an international dimension: in 1952 she was appointed as an American delegate to the International Conference of Women of the World, held in Athens, Greece. She subsequently spent time during the 1950s touring as a goodwill ambassador for the United States; in 1954 one such U.S. State Department tour took her to several nations in Southeast Asia. In 1963 she was appointed to the United States commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Stewart spent the rest of her life in Toledo, remaining active as a volunteer and philanthropist until her death in 1987, at the age of 94.
