Did you know that dogs and cats have blood types - just like people do - only different from ours and different from each other? Pets can get many diseases that can be treated with blood and plasma transfusions. In our hospital, we maintain a blood and plasma bank just for the treatment of pets. Our blood bank is used for our critical patients being treated in our hospital, and the blood bank is also available to your veterinarian if your pet is in need of a life-saving t...ransfusion while being treated there. We are often asked where we get the blood .... we purchase it from a national blood bank for pets and store the blood and plasma in our facility for immediate use. All blood products are "typed" so we know who can safely receive it, and all blood is screened for common infectious diseases (ewww ). Recently, mainly due to COVID-19, there has been national shortages of pet blood! To help keep our own blood bank full, we have a number of community donors with wonderful owners who are willing to bring their pets in to donate in an emergency situation -- one of these community donors may very well save your dog's life one day! All of these pets are screened and typed as well. Let us know if you have any questions about blood transfusions in animals!

Meet Rascal! Rascal came to see us for a burping problem. We actually think he came in to show off his new Christmas attire! For Rascal, it’s never too early to break out the holiday spirit. I mean, after 2020, don’t we all deserve to celebrate a little early and ring in a new year?!?!
